It's closed, yes.

> therefore it's impossible to create a community-led fork of MLS.

I don't think so. If there would be an entity/organisation (e.g GNOME foundation) behind such an effort, I'm pretty sure we can move the data over. Mozilla has not used the data for any selfish reasons.

> Mozilla claim that releasing the database was illegal but whenever I asked which laws exactly that would break, I got nothing but silence.

I don't think they said that and if some Mozilla person did say that, it was misinformed. I had discussions with relevant Mozilla hackers and they informed me of the extremely complex and sensitive privacy concerns related to keeping the database open. E.g an open database like that, could be easily used by person to track down their ex-spouse, who do not want to be tracked down by them.

So I don't think there was any ill intent involved from Mozilla here. I think it was more that Mozilla didn't not want to be held liable to any such sensitive privacy issues. However, other communities and individuals might not share this extremely cautious approach, especially if it means making the database closed and I completely understand that.

> I strongly suggest trying to somehow help out OpenWLANMap,

Last I checked it's extremely German-specific and its database is pretty small, compared to that of MLS even though they've been around for much longer. Do they provide Google geolocate-compatible interface?

> Radiocells.org,

Their coverage map is good for Europe but the rest of the world isn't there at all.

> CellID,

AFAIK, MLS makes use of that.zeenixhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04142631863736897222noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3575421168816814786.post-53365042644259952712018-10-21T13:08:52.738-07:002018-10-21T13:08:52.738-07:00> Mozilla folks are the good guys
