Rygel needs your help!

While it is a well known fact that Rygel is as awesome as this new Intrepid class ship of mine in Star Trek Online



unfortunately its preferences UI looks as ugly as this



Apart from being ugly, it also doesn't really integrate well in GNOME as there is already a UI that lets you easily specify your file sharing preferences: gnome-user-share. I had some discussions with Bastien on how to fix this and we had agreed on a plan to kill this UI while merging the relevant parts of it into gnome-user-share in July 2010:

  • Rygel:
    • always starts as part of the session.
    • times-out and exits if there is nothing to share.
    • (MediaExport backend) doesn't share anything by default.
  • gnome-user-share
    • uses the MediaExport's DBus API to add/remove folders.

While the Rygel parts are mostly in place, Bastien (being a very busy developer) didn't manage to get any time to do the gnome-user-share part and neither did I. :(

GNOME 3.0 is happening very soon and Rygel might not get its due fame in release notes (again) if there is no nice UI to impress the end users with. So if you want to help either Rygel or GNOME 3.0 project, here is you chance!

Hello. For System Settings (for Gnome 3), I have make a mockup for File Sharing [1]. For sharing files with DLNA, add folder to the left list and check "Multimedia Sharing". For change options (transcode on/off, type of file shiring (audio, video and/or photo), etc) and/or choose protocole using for the sharing (DLNA, DAAP, etc) click on option button.

This mockup is based on the official Gnome System Setting design wiki. [2]

What do you think about it?

PS: I finish a new version of this mockup for tomorow.

A reminder in case of UI changes: UI Change Announcement Period started on January 10. UI Freeze is on February 21, as we all now.

clutter-gst

After I was informed about the existence of ClutterGstVideoSink, I quickly modified my super-video application to make it use that. But as soon as i did that, i stopped getting even the static image. After careful analysis for days, I figured that I was supposed to call gst_bus_add_signal_watch() on the pipeline bus since ClutterGstVideoSink uses messages on the bus combined with signal handlers to render the frames in the application thread. This is obviously a 'dirty' hack; a hack because gst elements are supposed to do all the media processing in the pipeline thread, dirty because gst bus is not meant for media transport. Shame Ubuntu shame

I am no more a fan of Ubuntu. The reason is their recent demonstration of lack of community spirit. Here is the release announcement of Ubuntu hardy alpha6. If you scroll-down you can see the gnome-system-monitor's new cool "Resources" view featured with a nice screenshot. Since Karl-Lattimer worked really hard to make this happen, he asked to be given personal credit on that page. Don't know about others but I see this as a very reasonable thing to ask. The result of this request can be seen in the announcement of hardy beta. They just removed the feature from the announcement. Shame Ubuntu shame.
